Trader Vic's Tiki Fashion Show

Last night was the annual Trader Vic's Classic Tiki Fashion Show.  This was the first time we have attended and it was super fun!  The clothes were all for sale and were provided by Retro Diva,  Peter Thomas Hair was responsible for the fabulous hairdos on the models, and Tanoa was spinning some great records like he always does!  We thought we would be standing the whole time but the manager got a table by the window for us.  So nice!

with Leah and Jodi

Fashion show time!

Ileath pretty in pink...

I loved this purse Rosa was modeling.
Hard to tell but it had lobsters and crabs on it!

That man on the left certainly appears to be enjoying the show.

More rum = more silliness

At Swell Bar to end the night.  Here I am with Leah and Ileath.

Hope everyone else had a fun Saturday and enjoys the rest of the weekend!

Viva Las Vegas 16 Recap - Day 4

Here it is, my last Viva post to sum up VLV 16…

I wanted to get a bit of music shopping done Sunday so I bought a handful of CDs at the No Hit Records booth. While I did this, Ben checked out Tennessee Voodoo Coupe in Bienville and said they were really good. I am bummed I did not get to check them out since I was too busy shopping. Shame on me! Hopefully they will play again some other time and I’ll get to see them.

After shopping we headed over to check out the pool party for a bit. We had to wait in line FOREVER in the hot sun and wind (there went my hair) but eventually made it in. At least since they were strict on the number of people allowed in, there were plenty of shady spots to sit and it was easy to get a drink. We did not spend all that much time in there and left before the swimsuit contest started. We were more interested in the second Charles Phoenix slideshow at 5:00.

Happy to be in the shade...

full length outfit shot...

The second slideshow was great as always and Charles Phoenix had on another awesome airbrushed suit to match the Hawaiian rainbow bread he brought and threw into the audience. Never a dull moment!

Conan lamb cake!

After changing and having dinner we were all set to see Nikki Hill. As was expected, she was amazing!!! I am so glad I bought her album earlier on since the line to get it afterwards was super long. Lines, lines and more lines…that kind of sums up how we spent so much of our time at Viva this year. Guess there is no way to really avoid it though.
What would I have done without these comfy shoes?!?!
Waiting for Nikki Hill...

Nikki Hill!!!

I had not printed a schedule off of the Viva website for a while so it was on the flight out I saw that Roy Kay had been added to the Sunday night lineup. I was very happy about that. He is one of my favorites! Del Villarreal sums him up as “the man with a smile in his voice”. I think that’s a perfect description!

Roy Kay

Always nice to run into Kim.  I bought the seahorse earrings
I am wearing from her etsy shop, Atomic Frocks.

Next we caught Ray Collins Hot Club. We had never seen them before and really enjoyed it!

And finally, Dr. Crazy Joe from Ohio! What a killer way to end the weekend! No one wanted it to end which was obvious since we kept applauding for additional encores. He finally ended around 2:30 or 3:00 in the morning. Sunday nights at Viva always seem to be the wildest.

Dr. Crazy Joe!

Discussing whether or not they can do another encore...

"Let 'em know!"

Acting like we did not have to leave the next day we headed to the bar for one more drink. Glad that we did since I won $70 on video Keno which pretty much made it so I broke even with my little bit of gambling I was doing here and there.

Last shot of Viva...3:30 or so Monday morning...

I was sad to leave Vegas and have to go back to reality (though my liver and lungs were more than ready to get home). We were happy to run into our old friend Ahmad at the airport. We all went to school together and I’ve know this guy since I was 12! Such a good person and always great to run in to. The three of us grabbed a drink together and were on the same flight home. It was a nice way to end our trip.

Ben and Ahmad - Newark in the house!

We have now started our count down to the Rhythm Riot in England this November. So excited for that! The full lineup has not been announced yet but this is it so far according to an email I received…

Nikki Hill
The Royal Rhythmaires
The Truly Lover Trio
Ray Collins Hot-Club
The Haystack Hi-Tones
Joe & The Hornets
Miss Lily Moe
The Zazou Cowboys

Viva Las Vegas 16 Recap - Day 3

We packed so much into Saturday and there were so many highlights! This post is going to be a bit long but I just do not want to forget anything!

We went over to the car show for just a bit since both of us do not have the patience to stay out in the sun forever looking at cars. I knew two things I definitely wanted to see though and that was the old motorcycles and the original customs on display behind the fancy velvet ropes. We also managed to get a refreshing tiki drink and check out Vicky Tafoya for a few minutes before we had to get the heck out of the sun.

I'm a sucker for a Thunderbird...

Super old Harley...

...and it still starts!

Not sure what we wanted to do next, Ben found out from some guy in the bathroom that Lance Romance would be playing with Jinx Jones in Brendan’s. Perfect! Jinx Jones is a local guy and Lance Romance plays with the Hillbilly Hellcats who we have loved for years. I really enjoy watching him play. It was a great show and actually not crowded in Brendan’s so we were very happy!

Then it was time to change and see one of our absolute favorites we cannot get enough of, Rip Carson! He was so awesome! I so regret not buying the poster he had for sale. We had not seen him in years and he was very different on stage than when we saw him before whipping a chair with his belt. In fact, he played the first Viva we ever went to in 2000. Everything he played we loved. Some of the audience seemed a bit perplexed though. Someone even shouted ‘rockabilly’ in between songs. I guess they were not digging the style of the amazing song he was singing right before that. I loved his comeback though when he said, calm as ever, ‘what do you think this is, some sort of a rockabilly weekender or something?’ Hilarious! People even would shout requests and he would play it, even if it was not on the set list. I only hope we catch him again sometime soon. If we find out he is playing down south, we may have to make a quick trip to catch it. We unfortunately left before his set was over since we thought we should catch at least one Little Richard song before Deke’s Guitar Geek Show. But then Little Richard went on so late that we could have seen all of Rip Carson. We were so frustrated but what can you do when so much good stuff happen at once?

My Shaheen I have had since the late 90s...
I have gotten so much use out of it and have worn it to a ton of VLVs!

Rip Carson

Now, I think I could do 15 posts alone about how awesome Deke’s Guitar Geek Show was but I won’t. Thanks to my hubby who suggested we not miss it this year. We were both blown away at all of the acts that played a song or two and all of the guitars on stage and history we learned. And just when we thought it could not get any better they brought on a guest drummer at the end, MARKY RAMONE!!! I just about flipped my lid! I did not know he was there at all and couldn’t wipe the smile off my face when he came out and played ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll High School’ and ‘Surfin’ Bird’ with Deke, Chris “Sugarballs” Sprague, and Crazy Joe. The latter song since one of the members of The Trashmen were in the audience. As we were leaving the show we overheard one guy sum up what I think we were all thinking…he said ’I just saw Little Richard and Marky Ramone in the same hour! I can go home now!”

Roy Kay

So amazing to watch Chuck Hughes from Hillbilly Hellcats
play something we had never seen, the Chapman Stick!  Look it up!

Cialis the Rockabilly Gorilla!

We love some Crazy Joe!  I mean, Dr. Crazy Joe!

Marky Ramone on drums!

Ran into my old friend Katie!  She is so adorable!

Next up, Si Cranstoun! I think everyone already knows how awesome he is! I sadly did not get any real good photos of him because I was so dead at that point of the night but still hung in there.

After managing to survive all of the excitement of Saturday there was still one more day to go…
