We went over to the car show for just a bit since both of us do not have the patience to stay out in the sun forever looking at cars. I knew two things I definitely wanted to see though and that was the old motorcycles and the original customs on display behind the fancy velvet ropes. We also managed to get a refreshing tiki drink and check out Vicky Tafoya for a few minutes before we had to get the heck out of the sun.
I'm a sucker for a Thunderbird...
...and it still starts!
Not sure what we wanted to do next, Ben found out from some guy in the bathroom that Lance Romance would be playing with Jinx Jones in Brendan’s. Perfect! Jinx Jones is a local guy and Lance Romance plays with the Hillbilly Hellcats who we have loved for years. I really enjoy watching him play. It was a great show and actually not crowded in Brendan’s so we were very happy!

Then it was time to change and see one of our absolute favorites we cannot get enough of, Rip Carson! He was so awesome! I so regret not buying the poster he had for sale. We had not seen him in years and he was very different on stage than when we saw him before whipping a chair with his belt. In fact, he played the first Viva we ever went to in 2000. Everything he played we loved. Some of the audience seemed a bit perplexed though. Someone even shouted ‘rockabilly’ in between songs. I guess they were not digging the style of the amazing song he was singing right before that. I loved his comeback though when he said, calm as ever, ‘what do you think this is, some sort of a rockabilly weekender or something?’ Hilarious! People even would shout requests and he would play it, even if it was not on the set list. I only hope we catch him again sometime soon. If we find out he is playing down south, we may have to make a quick trip to catch it. We unfortunately left before his set was over since we thought we should catch at least one Little Richard song before Deke’s Guitar Geek Show. But then Little Richard went on so late that we could have seen all of Rip Carson. We were so frustrated but what can you do when so much good stuff happen at once?
My Shaheen I have had since the late 90s...
I have gotten so much use out of it and have worn it to a ton of VLVs!
Now, I think I could do 15 posts alone about how awesome Deke’s Guitar Geek Show was but I won’t. Thanks to my hubby who suggested we not miss it this year. We were both blown away at all of the acts that played a song or two and all of the guitars on stage and history we learned. And just when we thought it could not get any better they brought on a guest drummer at the end, MARKY RAMONE!!! I just about flipped my lid! I did not know he was there at all and couldn’t wipe the smile off my face when he came out and played ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll High School’ and ‘Surfin’ Bird’ with Deke, Chris “Sugarballs” Sprague, and Crazy Joe. The latter song since one of the members of The Trashmen were in the audience. As we were leaving the show we overheard one guy sum up what I think we were all thinking…he said ’I just saw Little Richard and Marky Ramone in the same hour! I can go home now!”
So amazing to watch Chuck Hughes from Hillbilly Hellcats
play something we had never seen, the Chapman Stick! Look it up!
Cialis the Rockabilly Gorilla!
We love some Crazy Joe! I mean, Dr. Crazy Joe!
Marky Ramone on drums!
Ran into my old friend Katie! She is so adorable!
Next up, Si Cranstoun! I think everyone already knows how awesome he is! I sadly did not get any real good photos of him because I was so dead at that point of the night but still hung in there.
After managing to survive all of the excitement of Saturday there was still one more day to go…
